Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
Happy Wax on Wednesday! I continue to obsess with cyanotypes here and all the magic that can happen with them. Ever have a print that did not come out the way you planned or initially laid it out ? This can happen with gel prints, eco prints, botanical printing , or in the case this week cyanotypes. Sometimes refocusing your focal point will help you to discover details in your image you didn't see before. Reframing your image can actually save a print that may have otherwise not quite worked.
Supplies I used this week:
Each week I list the supplies I used in the video here on the blog for you so that you can see and easily find the items used for that week's technique . If you purchase items from the links provided it sometimes generates a few cents in commission which goes right back in to creating videos for you on the youtube channel. It does not raise the cost for you in any way, and is the same link you would find on a regular amazon prime search . Thank you so much! Also , although the photos here can help you easily find the product . I also recommend that you look at your local art /hobby store to make sure you are getting the lowest price. Sometimes with weekly 40% off coupons basic items can be found at a better price. Happy Wax on Wednesday!
I have been literally obsessed with cyanotype printing this year. I have mounted many to panel and given them an encaustic finish as I would with my traditional photographs, but lately I am drawn to a softer cold wax finish as well.
Cold wax provides a soft satiny luster if buffed out once completely dry. Or it can be left
a velvety matte just like encaustic. Cold wax does not need to be fused or heated in any way and dries and cures naturally on the paper. Multiple layers can be added . As a finish , I usually apply 2-3 thin coats of the medium.

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
I have been working a lot with cyanotypes and various alternative photo processes in the studio lately . Cyanotypes have to be my favorite because once the paper is developed it can become every shade of my favorite color :)
This week I compared 5 different papers for the cyanotype process using the same exposer time , wash process etc. I used a mix of traditional watercolor papers and fine art print paper for photographs. My comparison consisted of what I call the 3Ds (Depth of color, Detail, and Durability of the paper ) .
Encaustic can be added to cyanotypes to create a beautiful finish both mat or high gloss. In this weeks video I will show both looks can add depth to the cyanotype once mounted to panels.

Happy Wax on Wednesdays!
In the Fall I love to take long early morning walks and capture inspiration for landscape paintings . Fall is a beautiful time to get outside and collect beautiful inspiration photos for painting. All of the vibrant warm colors of the Fall leaves, catching the last flowers blooming before winter, the reds, oranges, greens , all joined together for one last glorious moment .

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
This week creating a collaged background on panel with some of the botanical oil prints from this week's Monday Warmup video. These were done on Hanshi rice paper which are thin and absorb well into the encaustic surface. They also take the detail of the botanical images very well. There are so many wonderful opportunities for applications for these fun botanical monototypes . If you have stacks of gel prints (not the acrylic kind :) , or mono types stacking up in your studio, try creating some fun encaustic collaged backgrounds with them !

I love working with collage in all of it's many forms. My favorite has always been using both found and vintage papers and objects to create in a very intuitive way. It is a process I have returned to over and again for many years. For me both the tactile feel of the the different textures being united together , the joy of using otherwise discarded objects and recycling them giving them new purpose , and using fragments of antique objects and papers that perhaps haven't seen the light of day in many years or even decades , is what gives me inspiration for these collage pieces.
If you would like to join me for the full process of creating these collage pieces , and also the coffee print used this week, the full process videos are available on the Patreon channel for the "Mover's and Shakers " level on the Monday warm ups. You have ALL of the videos for each level you subscribe to for as long as you subscribe. I find this is a great way to create bonus content in the form of mini workshops that you can refer back to whenever the creative mood strikes ! Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
At the beginning of each Fall season I get in the mood for some encaustic collage . Used teabags are wonderful to incorporate into these collage pieces because they are both light weight, absorbent, and they take printing with inks like india and sumi with beautiful detail ! The sumi ink I am using this week has very subtle gold tones in it giving it a light lustre . I also add some instant coffee for more depth to the already tea stained bags. It is fun to acquire a stack of these tea bag papers and have a printing day ! Simply hang them to dry and then unfold them carefully , emptying out the used tea.
