I love having the ability to build up multiple layers of wax paint and scrape back through the History of the painting to reveal previous moments , marks , and colors. Letting the previous layers inform the next as they build and evolve . This week I have at the ready multiple tools to excavate those previous layers, marks, and colors, including clay loop scrapers , putty knives , razor blades , and painting spatulas . Each tool leaves it's own unique mark in fun ways helping to reveal unique pieces to build upon . Moving back to move forward .

Winter blues already ?
We have already had a couple of inches of snow here. I don't need winter to enjoy my favorite blue paints though! This week I used the same color in both encaustic paint and oil pigment stick "Indigo" to show some exciting different effects that can be achieved using the exact same color and stencils in a different way. This ended up being a really fun sample board to work on observing the different effects between the solid encaustic paint , and the beautiful ghosty look of the gel plate prints up against the positive printed version.
Stencils can be used in so many fun ways with encaustic ! When working with encaustic you can use the stencils with oil paint sticks, encaustic paint, and PanPastels for some exciting and very different effects on the wax . When I am using stencils with heated encaustic paint , I use Stencil Girl brand stencils because I know that I can clean the wax off of them after by turning my heated surface down and gently wiping off the wax with a paper towel . Plus I am kind of addicted to quite a few of the patterns as you can see mine are well used :)
Stencils can be used for encaustic printmaking , as back grounds , to add texture , or just incorporate some pattern. You can layer over them so there is just a subtle hint of a pattern shown through the layers of the painting or use them as a bolder focal point . The GelPress plate that I am using in the video is the 5x7 size so that I can easily hold it in my hand and use it as a tool for printing .

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
Last week I got a couple of great questions that I answer for you in this week's video about using resin with encaustic. Also I got a fun question of "can you use encaustic on the glossy ceramic subway tiles." The subway tiles that have been fired to a high gloss aren't porous , but this week let's help them along a bit and make them a pours surface that can accept the encaustic wax ! I love a fun challenge :)
I am also super excited to announce that my 19th online workshop is

Happy Wax on Wednesday!
This week really mixing up the media using some encaustic papers just like the ones from last week's video and continuing on with them by adding more fun pattern with the Gel Press Plate ,oil pigment sticks, and alcohol inks. If you missed last week's video make sure and watch that one first on just how these copy papers were embellished with alcohol inks and encaustic wax . The Gel Press plate is perfect for adding additional great patterns to these papers and finding things around the house or studio to use for the pattern making is half the fun ! Last week I added the papers to an encaustic journal . This week lets take these beautiful patterned paper back grounds and make fun shapes to use in collage ! Then let's continue to "Mix up the Media" add a glass like finish with resin . Woo hoo!
If you are looking to dive in further and have LOTS of fun with hours of projects "Encausticology Paper Journey
workshop takes you through fun projects with paper and encaustic and shows step by step how to create journals from scratch to house the encaustic papers beautifully. Details for the workshop HERE
You can see more about my collage process in "Moving the Paint and You " workshop . This fun workshop has 30 days of warmup painting in
cold wax oil encaustic water color acrylic graphite inks and more ! Many of which I show how you can take these super fun warmup exercises and turn them into finish works like collage ! Workshop details HERE
