Wax on Wednesdays Inktober Alcohol Ink and Paper Play !

10/29/2019

This week I started out in an entirely different direction but was drawn away by the
lovely way the alcohol ink and wax were playing together on the paper.

One of my favorite things to do with encaustic is work on paper. The way the wax absorbs into the paper and becomes luminous . It is a transformation that mesmerizes me every time. Encaustic layers cannot be built up on paper unless it is first mounted to a rigid support. However a single layer of wax that is absorbed into the paper is fine .
What do I do with all of these encaustic papers ?
Journals, Journals, Journals!
Encaustic journals are a perfect way to display all of these wax infused gems.
This week I got so carried away with the alcohol ink and encaustic papers in the
end I had to create a journal just for them .

Supplies I used this week:
Each week I list the supplies I used in the video here on the blog for you so that you can see and easily find the items used for that week's  technique .

If you purchase items from the links provided it sometimes generates a few cents in commission  which goes right back in to creating videos for you on the youtube channel. It  does not raise the cost for you in any way, and is the same link you would find on a regular amazon prime search . Thank you ahead for you support of Wax on Wednesdays in any way ! Also , although the photos here can help you easily find the product . I also recommend that you look at your local art /hobby store to make sure you are getting the lowest price. Sometimes with weekly 40% off coupons basic items can be found at a better price.

For fining printing on the palette you can use an R and F hotplate, Paula Roland Hot Box , or these Enkaustikos anodized aluminum plates placed directly on the griddle .

Happy Inktober !
India ink is such a wonderful addition to encaustic painting and at the top of my go to medium list in my own studio. It has been fun to focus an entire  month on it's versatility  when using it in encaustic.
One of my favorite papers to paint on with encaustic is Unryu rice paper.
We explore this extensively in
"Encausticology Paper Journey " workshop.

Even little tid bits of left over papers can be
brought to life and new interest with a little fun mark making session
with black India ink.
This week I take some of those left over painted papers and create some fun mini collage pieces.

We are just getting started over in Encausticology Home Stories workshop !
This all new workshop focuses on building a series of off the panel works on one of my favorite symbols the home .
In all of my  super excitement about sharing this all new workshop and all of the fun projects we were doing in
photo encaustic imagery , 3 dimensional techniques, and adding assemblage, it suddenly
dawned on me (and several students mentioned it :))
that everyone might not have access to a mitre saw to create these houses !
"Oh my gosh what was I thinking ? "
I offered  the full 10 house kit, cut , sanded , and ready to paint made to order just for students of Encausticology Home Stories workshop . I have now shipped out several hundred of these houses and feel like a wooden house expert ! (as well as how to get saw dust out of anything :)
I have to limit these kits just to students of Encausticology Home though so there is still time in life to paint !
The full kit of 10 houses is 35.00 plus 14.50 priority flat rate shipping box and is available on the workshop page.
You can see all of the Details for Encausticology Home Stories workshop by clicking the link below. We would love to have you join us ! (house kits are sold separately :)

It's always fun to look around and see what out of the ordinary everyday items can be used as art tools. Fall and Inktober become a perfect opportunity to look outdoors and see what can move that ink around the encaustic surface in some fun and interesting ways !
Fallen leaves, bark , twigs, moss , rocks all create fun organic marks .
What can you find outside ?

Inktober , Let's Have Fun !

Inktober !
I thought it would be fun to play with the Piñata Alcohol Inks .
Small Disclaimer : I have not worked with alcohol inks and encaustic in many years because alcohol ink is not archival and I found out the hard way using a different brand . Some colors in the piece I had done completely changed shades over a period of 6 months or so even though they were underneath layers of clear wax.

With that said, I haven't to date had a problem with the white, gold , or black , which are the predominant colors in this week's piece. I also snuck in some of that yummy orange though I just couldn't resist . We will just have to see how that will  hold up a few months from now I will be sure and let you know !
What has been your results with alcohol ink and encaustic ?
It is so much fun to play with, and irresistible to see the marks down through  the layers of wax . I would love to hear what experiences you have had good and bad with the colors you have worked with.

All new workshop "Encausticology Home Studies " opens this Friday!

Wax on Wednesdays Caramel Burn!

One of the reasons I love working with encaustic is that I love the organic nature of the medium including my
usual substrate which is wood. In working with wood I am not limited to a birch board panel . Any wood
is fair game and it is fun to scour the lumber dept for some fun and exciting alternatives!
One of my favorite things to do is peruse through  lumber deptartments  picturing everything
delightfully drenched in wax. (What would the employees think if they knew that ?)

My favorite heat gun and torch are listed here. The Iwatani torch head is my favorite torch for encaustic painting . It comes as just the torch head which attaches to the butane canisters as listed below. The second torch is a less expensive and more compact alternative.
