I love working with collage in all of it's many forms. My favorite has always been using both found and vintage papers and objects to create in a very intuitive way. It is a process I have returned to over and again for many years. For me both the tactile feel of the the different textures being united together , the joy of using otherwise discarded objects and recycling them giving them new purpose , and using fragments of antique objects and papers that perhaps haven't seen the light of day in many years or even decades , is what gives me inspiration for these collage pieces.
If you would like to join me for the full process of creating these collage pieces , and also the coffee print used this week, the full process videos are available on the Patreon channel for the "Mover's and Shakers " level on the Monday warm ups. You have ALL of the videos for each level you subscribe to for as long as you subscribe. I find this is a great way to create bonus content in the form of mini workshops that you can refer back to whenever the creative mood strikes ! Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
At the beginning of each Fall season I get in the mood for some encaustic collage . Used teabags are wonderful to incorporate into these collage pieces because they are both light weight, absorbent, and they take printing with inks like india and sumi with beautiful detail ! The sumi ink I am using this week has very subtle gold tones in it giving it a light lustre . I also add some instant coffee for more depth to the already tea stained bags. It is fun to acquire a stack of these tea bag papers and have a printing day ! Simply hang them to dry and then unfold them carefully , emptying out the used tea.

Happy Wax on Wednesday !
I ended up accumulating a huge stack of monotypes from all of the projects we did on Wax on Wednesdays last month! I decided this week to create some covers for journals for them to get them all sorted out. Journals are one of my favorite ways to house encaustic print making papers and I have accumulated a small library of them in the studio. It is a great way for me to reference all of the print making techniques I cave done over the years and for visitors to meander through .
These heavier prints done on Arches watercolor paper make perfect journal covers for all of the August Monotypes done both on Wax on Wednesdays and the Monday Warmup sessions on the Patreon channel. I wanted to keep with the botanical print making theme but expand on it some more and try out some more fun options for pigments :)
I ended up creating fun layers of rich warm tones with instant coffee and cool tones of green and turquoise india inks using geranium leaves from the garden.

Happy Wax on Wednesdays!
This week I had stacks and stacks of encaustic monotprints in the studio from last week's wax on wednesdays project and the last 2 weeks of Monday Warm ups on Patreon. They all had oil paint either as their main pigment or added somewhere in the mix so they needed a bit to dry . Now they are all ready to receive a beautiful dreamy encaustic finish . I also explored adding texture to one of the botanicals from last week. This was and exploration to see how I would like the prints with some interesting textures added from drips, brush strokes and a vintage feed sack ! If I were to create the last piece in the video as a finished work, I would first mount the print to a wood panel before adding any encaustic wax . Then I would be free to build up as many layers as I wanted of wax and texture . The damar resin in the medium cures over time. Any bulky layers of medium added to something flimsy and bendable like copy paper will eventually have the opportunity to crack off if the paper is ever bent down the road.

It is a lot of fun to add collage elements to photo encaustic. But , what if your collage elements don't go with the overall tone of your image ? I usually print my images in black and white when I am adding other elements in . This way I can tone the image to match whatever ephemera I may add. This week I chose some yummy rust stained tissue and a creamy rice paper extra on the fibrous texture ! Staining the image with coffee will be perfect to warmup the tone of this image to go with the rusted ephemera.

Happy Wax on Wednesdays!
This week I wanted to explore using watercolor washes to colorize my photographs before adding clear encaustic medium to them. Sometimes when my images are printed there is just something off in how it came out. Not to let those prints go to waist, I save them in a big folder for experimental use in new techniques I want to try, or live demonstrations. This week I wanted to try out both a mono gradient , using one color fro dark to light on the first image, and a complimentary combination on the second image. Dipping images forces the paper to hold a lot of wax. As the wax cures and hardens this paper may very well crack over time and surely will if it is ever bent somewhere down the line. That means these dipped little exercise are not stable on their own. You can mat and frame them to keep them stable. However one must keep in mind that if they are ever improperly removed from the frame they still may crack once the wax has full cured.

Happy Wax on Wednesdays ! This week using the coffee background piece from last week's Wax on Wednesday video to create an assemblage collage with an image transfer. I am using my same technique from the 2015 "Encausticology Collage" online course where I did with the zipper embedding. This time changing it up with a vintage rolled paper boarder instead of the zipper, and adding a photo image transfer in the center.
