Hello and Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
This week continuing the layers with cold wax on Arches Oil Paper. These middle layers are often what I call the "Character Layers", because although much of it may get covered up in the end, some of the exciting texture and interesting marks made in the cold wax medium will remain . Building on these beautiful textures and marks in the wax is part of the wonderful draw to this wonderful medium. When I work abstractly during these middle layers I am still searching for where they may take me . Exploring color , mark , line, and creating fun texture so that I don't become too detailed at this stage of the painting. Next week we will hone in and finish up these little paintings with the final layers.
Want to dive in to an exciting cold wax painting journey ? "Cold Wax Journal Journey" is a full forever access online workshop with tons of projects to get you started on an exciting journey in cold wax painting. Hello and happy Wax on Wednesdays!
It is fun to change it up once in a while so this week mixing up my favorite color palette for cold wax painting and beginning a first layer on Arches Oil paper.
One of the exciting things about cold wax is that so many things can be mixed right in to create color! A lot of the pigments like oil paint sticks that we already have on hand for encaustic painting can be used to create a cold wax paint.

Happy Wax on Wednesday!
The sun peaked out this week and I seized a long awaited opportunity to print outdoors. I love printing with natural botanicals but was wanting to get a few of my photographs printed as well . I have an idea for this particular print in and working it in with some of my botanical cyanotypes.
I also can't wait for Spring to bring some new printing materials ! It hasn't happened yet, but the snow has melted, and I am optimistic that I can finally feel Spring very slowly making it' way.

Happy Creating :) xo Shari I have always loved packing up little art supplies, and creating little creativity kits, to take with me on road trips. Usually you have to think small, compact , and if flying a good choice are things that are dry and won’t get all over if things get bumped around. If its a car trip there is quite a bit more leeway. This week I went down to visit my daughter at school and packed a few things to create with while she was in classes. I brought my latest 2 cyanotypes and some cold wax so that I could apply a finish to them. And also a travel kit for cyanotypes in case I found a good spot to create some more. I decided that I wanted to add a pop of color to one of the prints and was lucky to find an art store near by the hotel. Oil sticks are not something I would normally pack in my suitcase although I have been tempted :) This week’s Wax on Wednesday was done from the hotel room . It ‘s so fun to adapt to creating with just limited supplies and I feel like sometimes that thinking outside the box excitement gets creativity flowing and rejuvenates inspiration for when you return home to your creative space again ! Having fun on Wax on Wednesdays on YouTube ? Last April with uncertain times, I launched the Patreon channel with the intention of bringing artists mini workshops every week in the form of longer Wax on Wednesdays videos with step by step commentary , Monday Warmup videos , and monthly projects. There are 4 tiers on the channel to choose from and you can move up and down in tiers easily, see all past content for your chosen tier through the beginning of the channel last April, and subscribe and unsubscribe at any time. It is a way of getting a lot of content without the larger investment of a full workshop price. You can check out the channel any time at https://www.patreon.com/sharireplogle Have a wonderful weekend and happy creating ! xo Shari
Happy Wax on Wednesday!
On January 27, we created natural Skelton leaves to use in art. Since then several projects have been created to use with these lovely leaves! Today I am using a cyanotype that I created using these skeleton leaves on very fine Kozo paper and embedding the paper, a fun rice paper, and one of the actual skeleton leave into the encaustic surface. This is possible in part because all of these items are very light weight, absorbent , and therefore will embed easily into the wax. Tip: All patience and let you board cool down in between stages when embedding . A super warm board can lead to the wax smooshing out from under the embedded items and cause problems .

This week it's project #2 for the fun natural skeleton leaves we created 2 weeks ago. There are so many ways to incorporate these skeleton leaves into encaustic art. No skeleton leaves were harmed in the making of this video :) Creating impressions in the encaustic surface with leaves as in this Wax on Wednesdays video from 2018 :https://youtu.be/PvBtMH4IsHc
can be a lot of fun . The skeleton leaves give a lovely detail that is hard to replicate with a regular leaf .

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
I was gone for a couple of weeks finalizing things for the new cyanotype workshop that begins on January 15th. Computer and office work is not the fun part of being an artist but often takes up huge chunks of time. I am looking forward to begin this new journey with all of you joining me and have received lots of excited emails, (I am excited too :)) . It is a large group to start with. All of my workshops are self paced so you can jump in and begin whenever you like, but this one I am going to have to close the registration for so that I am able to handle class questions and communications with the group. It is just me on the other end here, so I answer each student one at a time, and don't like to rush my answers to thoughtful questions so that I can give you the best possible experience enjoying the course.
I have just 12 slots left before I close the registration for now. I may open for a second group in May/June but have not made decisions about that just yet . If you would like to see all of the details for this workshop click the photo below.

Thank you so much for creating with me for another year on Wax on Wednesdays !
See you in 2021! xo Shari
The arrival of winter here was a bit of a surprise this week . It seemed early this year as usually I don't have to worry about the snow until after Christmas. With so much of my art practice taking place outdoors , it probably shouldn't be a surprise at all . I saw the leaves quickly fall , the landscape become bare , the absence of insects, and hearing the birds chatter less and less . A lot of people love this quiet time. I have to admit I love the warmth of the sun and all that goes with it . Until then though I must work around the blue of winter, keep creating, and get outdoors whenever possible .
The cold and snow hasn't stopped me so far . These cyanotypes were exposed all day in the snow .
Join me on an all new workshop adventure !
My favorite color is blue.
Not just blue, but deep rich indigos and Prussian hues. It's no wonder I have always loved the deep blue tones of cyanotypes, a camera-less photographic process . I also love botanical printing in just about any way possible ! My surprise to myself came when I began wanting more from my cyanotype prints. I wanted more colors I wanted texture I wanted to create a more abstract painterly approach with no paint ! This sent me on an extensive journey into what this process is capable of . A journey that I am still on and still find immensely exciting with every print developed . I don't believe in just randomly breaking the rules. I believe in seeking extensive knowledge, and practice, of a medium , and then knowing which rules can be pushed and broken, and why. In this workshop I share my journey into my approach to cyanotypes completely . Join me for another workshop adventure into natural camera less photography in a painterly way (with no paint :) Workshop begins January 15th Early Registration Sale Ends Sunday ! 15% OFF registration COUPON CODE : " CYAN at checkout See all of the details for the workshop Here

Happy Wax on Wednesday to you, and a very Happy Thanksgiving if you are here in the US!
This week I am using some of my cyanotype prints that I enjoy certain areas of to create smaller collage works. We all have those prints that come out having some exciting parts but fall short of a perfect print. When printmaking, whether it is cyanotype, botanical printing , eco printing , gel printing ,etc . , I always save the ones that don't work out exactly as planned because there is usually areas of the print that are still really interesting . They may just work better cropped down to a smaller scale to focus on the exciting parts.
