Over the past few years on Wax on Wednesdays, I have shown several ways of approaching encaustic and collage including several different collage styles and also using different mediums to use and incorporate within the collage . There are of course endless approaches to this which is what keeps it truly an exciting process ! This week I thought I would do a video on my "Collage Doodles " . This is a super fun and relaxing exercise that has 3 different stages of exploration.
For the substrate for these I am using 4x4 ceramic tiles that are available at any home improvement store. I buy them by the box because it is much cheaper that way . Encaustic requires a both a rigid and porous support so I add Arches cold press water color paper to the tiles using an archival bookbinders glue and then sand the edges smooth once it is dry. I like this look better than simply trimming with a blade because it had a much neater finish . COLOR For this week's palette I am using gouache and creating little blocks of color , and having fun with color exploration . This is a really fun way to explore different color palettes , a new medium, or even a new brand . Perhaps you are trying to work out a color palette for a larger series of work . This is a great way to quickly explore what you are drawn to at the moment .
Pattern
Now fill in each color block with a different illustrative marks . This is such a fun way to explore patterns . I love to tell my students to do this every day for a week for just 20 minutes and see how your pattern making evolves over that week. Where did it lead you ? I tend to draw on textures from nature when creating my illustrative patterns. What inspires you ? Collage For these little collage pieces I used a 1920s magazine. Magazines are fun to use because you can use both illustrations , and text with multiple fonts and sizes to incorporate into your collage . Each time you take another step with this process you will find that the composition completely changes again. First off when adding the illustrative pattern making. If you add all dark patterns to one side etc. it can completely change the composition of your piece from how it started . leaving sections un patterned again changes the direction of the composition. Adding the collage papers completely reconfigures the piece yet again depending on what you add and where you add it . Fun , fun , fun !

Happy New Year!
This month on Wax on Wednesdays we will be exploring the exciting world of encaustic collage. There are a million ways to approach this, just like traditional collage . You can dive in with different styles , pigments, papers, and adhesives. There is no one right way to approach encaustic collage, but there are some helpful tips to help build a successful piece . This week I created a collage with hand painted water color papers. Other mediums that can be used for hand painted papers are; India inks gouache watercolor alcohol inks walnut ink Oil sticks I created the collage with an archival Pva glue and used the encaustic as a finish on the collage. Light weight papers can also be embedded into encaustic wax layers to create a collage as we will explore throughout the month. Layers of encaustic wax can be added over the collage to create textures , add additional pigments such as oil sticks or pastels to further enhance the collage , etc.

This week I thought it would be fun to change things up a bit and create some fun holiday painting that are perfect as hostess gifts, or beautiful decor for your holiday table !
The fun part about this alcohol ink project is the negative painting process . I completed these guys with a coat of Art Resin to give them a beautiful glass finish. The sides can be finished by running a bead of coordinating alcohol ink around the side , Copic marker, or even a gold or silver paint pen.
There are endless possibilities for these little guys. I love decorating a holiday table scapes and one of my favorite parts of the design is adding a little piece of my handmade art to each place setting.
These snowmen can be coasters and also a wonderful little holiday gift to each guest. Traveling to other Holiday gatherings this season? Create sets of 4 and give them as hostess gifts !

No way around it , encaustic is not an inexpensive art form . From the wood cradle boards , pigments, and the medium itself. I love finding inexpensive ways to just "play" with warm up exercises . Without pressure , or expectations.
In early childhood development we learn that playing is learning. Is that because the act of "play " is not intimidating ? There are no rules, or right or wrong way to play . The child is free to learn from exploration during play . Figuring key factors out as they engage in the act of play. The square will not fit in the round hole but it will fit in the square one. The crayons make fun marks on the paper depending on how I move my arm , my body, and my hand. So does the paint . As adults I believe we can still learn the most through play because the act of engagement is no longer intimidating. Playing is exploring , creating, investigating, engaging , practicing ,and enjoying the process of all of the above. Through that engagement we are going to "learn " what will happen without fear of loss. These days especially with social media , we expect ourselves to create everything perfectly when we sit down to paint. How often has this stopped us from creating at all ? Or , from trying something new? Playing is the act of beginning to learn a skill or furthering it .
These little guys were done on inexpensive ceramic tiles from the home improvement store . I get them by the box of 100 but even the loose ones are under a dollar each. Encaustic needs to have an absorbent and rigid surface . The tiles are rigid ,and adhering a nice heavy watercolor paper to them like Arches makes the surface absorbent . I use archival book binders glue to adhere the paper to the tiles .

I love having the ability to build up multiple layers of wax paint and scrape back through the History of the painting to reveal previous moments , marks , and colors. Letting the previous layers inform the next as they build and evolve . This week I have at the ready multiple tools to excavate those previous layers, marks, and colors, including clay loop scrapers , putty knives , razor blades , and painting spatulas . Each tool leaves it's own unique mark in fun ways helping to reveal unique pieces to build upon . Moving back to move forward .

Winter blues already ?
We have already had a couple of inches of snow here. I don't need winter to enjoy my favorite blue paints though! This week I used the same color in both encaustic paint and oil pigment stick "Indigo" to show some exciting different effects that can be achieved using the exact same color and stencils in a different way. This ended up being a really fun sample board to work on observing the different effects between the solid encaustic paint , and the beautiful ghosty look of the gel plate prints up against the positive printed version.
Stencils can be used in so many fun ways with encaustic ! When working with encaustic you can use the stencils with oil paint sticks, encaustic paint, and PanPastels for some exciting and very different effects on the wax . When I am using stencils with heated encaustic paint , I use Stencil Girl brand stencils because I know that I can clean the wax off of them after by turning my heated surface down and gently wiping off the wax with a paper towel . Plus I am kind of addicted to quite a few of the patterns as you can see mine are well used :)
Stencils can be used for encaustic printmaking , as back grounds , to add texture , or just incorporate some pattern. You can layer over them so there is just a subtle hint of a pattern shown through the layers of the painting or use them as a bolder focal point . The GelPress plate that I am using in the video is the 5x7 size so that I can easily hold it in my hand and use it as a tool for printing .

Happy Wax on Wednesdays !
Last week I got a couple of great questions that I answer for you in this week's video about using resin with encaustic. Also I got a fun question of "can you use encaustic on the glossy ceramic subway tiles." The subway tiles that have been fired to a high gloss aren't porous , but this week let's help them along a bit and make them a pours surface that can accept the encaustic wax ! I love a fun challenge :)
I am also super excited to announce that my 19th online workshop is

Happy Wax on Wednesday!
This week really mixing up the media using some encaustic papers just like the ones from last week's video and continuing on with them by adding more fun pattern with the Gel Press Plate ,oil pigment sticks, and alcohol inks. If you missed last week's video make sure and watch that one first on just how these copy papers were embellished with alcohol inks and encaustic wax . The Gel Press plate is perfect for adding additional great patterns to these papers and finding things around the house or studio to use for the pattern making is half the fun ! Last week I added the papers to an encaustic journal . This week lets take these beautiful patterned paper back grounds and make fun shapes to use in collage ! Then let's continue to "Mix up the Media" add a glass like finish with resin . Woo hoo!

This week I started out in an entirely different direction but was drawn away by the
lovely way the alcohol ink and wax were playing together on the paper. One of my favorite things to do with encaustic is work on paper. The way the wax absorbs into the paper and becomes luminous . It is a transformation that mesmerizes me every time. Encaustic layers cannot be built up on paper unless it is first mounted to a rigid support. However a single layer of wax that is absorbed into the paper is fine . What do I do with all of these encaustic papers ? Journals, Journals, Journals! Encaustic journals are a perfect way to display all of these wax infused gems. This week I got so carried away with the alcohol ink and encaustic papers in the end I had to create a journal just for them .

Happy Inktober !
India ink is such a wonderful addition to encaustic painting and at the top of my go to medium list in my own studio. It has been fun to focus an entire month on it's versatility when using it in encaustic. One of my favorite papers to paint on with encaustic is Unryu rice paper. We explore this extensively in "Encausticology Paper Journey " workshop.
Even little tid bits of left over papers can be
brought to life and new interest with a little fun mark making session with black India ink. This week I take some of those left over painted papers and create some fun mini collage pieces. Supplies I used this week:
